Niagara Falls' unique location between Canada and the US comprises of three waterfalls, not just one! Whether you want to see its frozen winter splendor or thunderous power in summer, both sides offer very different spectacles to choose from.
90% of the Niagara River flows over Canada's Horseshoe Falls. It doesn't just look awesome, its raw power is literally eroding the US-Canada border!
As the name suggests, the American Falls is on the American side. It offers some of the most extreme views, with visitors able to get nail-bitingly close to the edge!
Located in New York State, Bridal Veil is by far the smallest of the three. It's worth visiting the Cave of Winds attraction to see the water flow over you from the falls' base!
63-year-old Annie Taylor became the first of many to journey over Horseshoe Falls in a barrel. Horseshoe is terribly dangerous, but the others are too rocky to survive!
Boat tours operate in Niagara Gorge at the foot of the falls. Each country has different tour operators, so compare before deciding which side of the border to journey from.
A day should be enough to see Niagara Falls but it's worth scheduling more time if you plan to take advantage of the many activities, tours, and boat cruises available. It is very common for people to set aside a day-trip as part of a longer stay in Toronto or New York.
July to August are, unsurprisingly, the busiest months. If you want to avoid the crowds then going in June or September will make a considerable difference. Having said that, there are few things as awe-inspiring as the frozen Niagara in winter!
Both Toronto Pearson Airport and Buffalo Airport offer shuttle bus services, some with group discounts. It's worth noting that Toronto is much closer than Buffalo so, unless you're travelling from elsewhere in the US, you're probably better off accessing the falls from the Canadian side. There are direct trains twice a day between Toronto's Union Station and Niagara Falls.
- When should I visit?
- The falls can be be viewed 24 hours a day.
- Is it expensive?
- It is free to view, but you will need to pay parking fees, which can be around $20.
- Will I need a guide?
- It will definitely help. It's worth checking out our best-selling tours.
- How to get there
- Given the location of Niagara Falls between two countries, there are unlimited possibilities to get there. The most direct way would be by car, but there are various bus and coach options, too - it is best to research online first which would suit you best as part of a larger trip to Canada or the US.
- Additional information
- **You're going to get wet from the spray of the falls, so bring a rain jacket! | Make sure you have the appropriate travel documents (e.g. passport, visa) if you plan on crossing the border.*
What people are saying about Niagara Falls
I wanted to personally thank our tour guide/driver Al, who was exceptional in hosting the tour. He connected, grounded, very knowledgable of both Toronto and Niagara Falls and had many stories to go w it, which I loved. The tour I would definitely highly recommend, you get your moneys worth. Well organised and very informative w all details I required to attending and having a successful, enjoyable day. Thanks Al for being an awesome Host, also the admin team for keeping me informed. You definitely see all that is Niagara Falls about. BIG thanks again and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Ride was great, ticket booth lady was not very customer friendly. Would not take the electronic voucher where all other excursions did. We booked helicopter rides, boat tours, and this was the only place that didn’t take the electronic vouchers. The ticket booth lady then criticized how we purchased our ticket through the website. That’s always the main response when things don’t go right with an excursion, they always want to place blame on the booking agency. Heck, you guys are the main marketing hub that make things go.
Family with three teenagers - one visiting from Japan (first time in Canada). Long line at the funicular to go down to the dock, so we used the elevator/path instead. Boat ride was as awesome, good care of tots and families with babies. The ponchos were very useful. We took the funicular up as there was no line there. Our guest from Japan was impressed. Overall, good fun for any age, a must do in Niagara Falls.
Trip spoilt by return travel difficulties. Road closed so dropped off at Metro station to travel on rail system that we had not used before. Then rail line works caused us to use a busy and crowded shuttle service and finally walked the final mine because of lack of help from so called information personnel.
We had a seamless experience from check in to return drive. We recommend to plan early to avoid waiting times. There is an option to “buy” a video and pictures of you experience after the ride, which you may not get informed upfront. So ask at the entrance if you want to learn more.
